Ask It: Weight Watchers Apologist

Anonymous asked: Weight Watchers has changed over the last year. It now focuses on incorporating more healthy oils into your diet, and based on your weight/activity - you’re given a healthy amount of calories per day. It doesn’t really teach you to cut out anything, but rather to moderate your portions.

I think this comment is related to my recent criticism of Weight Watchers. I’ve done Weight Watchers. I know they recommend what they deem to be “healthy fats” (olive oil, avocado, etc.). That’s great (though I don’t think they go far enough in the fat-embracing department).

But I hate that they promote processed non-food (low Point-value sweets that are made of chemicals and artificial sweetener) over REAL food (nuts and nut butter have many more Points!).

Until Weight Watchers promotes real food over fake, processed food, I can’t get behind them. Sure, they teach portion control, but to me, that’s only half the battle. Quality of the food is the other half. You can eat 1,200 calories worth of crap and feel starving and miserable, or you can eat 1,200 calories worth of satisfying, real food, and feel totally satiated.
