Nutritionista How-To: Have a Healthier Happy Hour

The question I get most often from people trying to live a healthier life — especially people in my age group — is probably this one: How can I have a social life AND be healthy? By “social life,” I assume they mostly mean drinking, but the question is also relevant for people who love going out to eat (like moi). Since I’m heading to a happy hour tonight, I thought it’d be a good time to share some of my tips!

  • Scope out nicer restaurants in your area to see if they offer any sort of deal. It’s a good way to try out food you wouldn’t otherwise splurge on while keeping health in check. My favorite happy hour locale around here has smoked salmon, sauteed shrimp, and portabella mushrooms on the menu during happy hour!
  • Don’t feel pressured to order off the happy hour menu. Just because you’re there for happy hour doesn’t mean you have to order the mozzarella sticks! It might be a little pricier, but go with something healthier that’s going to satisfy you — maybe some grilled chicken, salad, or a turkey burger. Your health is worth the extra $$!
  • Drink something DELICIOUS. If you’re committed to limiting your drinks to one or two (which you probably should if you go to happy hour often!), at least drink something you love. I always order my favorite glass of wine, flavorful beer, or top-shelf liquor when I go out. I’d rather have less of a good thing than too much of a bad thing (if you know what I mean!). If you go for the good stuff, not only will you be more satisfied, but you’ll be less likely to wake up with a nasty hangover.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. I’ve had dishes customized every which way — whether it’s putting sauce on the side or getting a drink made with a different type of vodka than what it says on the menu. The key is asking very nicely! But don’t be afraid to customize your food/drink to fit your needs.
  • Remember why you’re there. Hopefully, it’s primarily to socialize! Eating and drinking are only secondary, and you don’t HAVE to partake. I compromise with myself by getting a small app and then planning on eating a smaller dinner at home. And I stick to two drinks, max. To me, there’s no need to order more if I sip slowly and enjoy every it. I don’t need to go drink for drink with everyone at the table.
