Nothing Screams Fall Like Apple Cider

For this week’s edition of Foodie Fall, I bring you a recipe for hot, spiced apple cider that’s pretty out of control. Hot. Apple. Cider. With rum if that’s your thing. Right?! I mean, RIGHT?

I know it might be a little late in the season, but why not make hot mulled cider for those (progressively) colder nights?

I adapted the following recipe from Real Simple (c’mon, dudes, you do not need to add honey to apple cider — it’s already PLENTY sweet!).

You’ll need:

  • 1 navel orange
  • 1/2 gallon apple cider (not juice)
  • 5 whole allspice berries
  • 6 whole cloves
  • pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 1 1/2-inch piece ginger, thinly sliced
  • 8 cinnamon sticks

Make it:

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, peel the zest from the orange to create long strips.
  2. In a medium pot, bring the cider, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and orange zest to a simmer. Do not boil. Heat, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
  3. Ladle into cups and serve warm with the cinnamon sticks.
  4. Let your soul be warmed.
