Nothing Screams Fall Like Apple Cider

For this week’s edition of Foodie Fall, I bring you a recipe for hot, spiced apple cider that’s pretty out of control. Hot. Apple. Cider. With rum if that’s your thing. Right?! I mean, RIGHT?
I know it might be a little late in the season, but why not make hot mulled cider for those (progressively) colder nights?

I adapted the following recipe from Real Simple (c’mon, dudes, you do not need to add honey to apple cider — it’s already PLENTY sweet!).
You’ll need:
- 1 navel orange
- 1/2 gallon apple cider (not juice)
- 5 whole allspice berries
- 6 whole cloves
- pinch ground nutmeg
- 1 1 1/2-inch piece ginger, thinly sliced
- 8 cinnamon sticks
Make it:
- Using a vegetable peeler, peel the zest from the orange to create long strips.
- In a medium pot, bring the cider, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and orange zest to a simmer. Do not boil. Heat, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
- Ladle into cups and serve warm with the cinnamon sticks.
- Let your soul be warmed.
